I am currently writing my PHD thesis in ethnomusicology and should defend before the end of the year.

My research focuses on rural music and poetry in the Amhara Highlands of Ethiopia (Gojjam) and more specifically on songs performed in solitude. These performances are compelling in the sense that they arouse deep feelings and bring about recollections of the musician’s personal past. First among these musical memories, we find events related to ongoing feuds, land use conflicts, and cattle thefts, and people like neighbours and kin.
I resort to pragmatic analysis and cognitive hypothesis to understand how social events come to be associated to precise musical and poetical materials (categorized into qererto, engurguro, zefen, or washint genres) ; and I study how the music shape the perception and remembering of those events.
